Winecup of the Ebon Blade “Teddy”

Teddy was born on June 27, 2018 and was bred by us, Wolfdogs of the Ebon Blade, here in Texas, USA. He is from our very first litter, which had 9 puppies (six males and three females). The litter theme was Texas Flowers, so each puppy was given the common name of a flower species native to Texas. Teddy’s parents are Anubis and Tarheel Queen of Hearts (“Talia”).

Teddy is a very goofy, playful, and talkative dog who always has a dopey smile on his face. All he wants is to be right by your side, participating in whatever you’re doing. He inherited his mother’s talkative nature, and will gleefully “woo-woo” at us anytime he thinks he isn’t getting enough attention. He is extremely affectionate, and is happiest when he’s the center of attention and getting belly rubs or leaning on your legs. Teddy is highly food motivated, which makes it very easy to teach him new things. He is eager to learn, and is very attentive, although his enthusiasm sometimes makes him a bit awkward. He is learning better impulse control, just like his mother, Talia, had to learn as a youngster.

Teddy does not display any same-sex aggression at all, and has been housed with several of his intact brothers throughout his life. He has also been very excited and polite with every new dog or puppy that he has met. Teddy is a wonderful dog to include in play groups for this reason. Teddy does not display any resource guarding tendencies at all towards humans or other dogs. He does have a moderate prey drive, but with sufficient motivation, he is able to be redirected.

Teddy will be participating in our wolfdog breeding program, but has also been proposed as a new Foundation Dog for the Tamaskan Dog breed, which will give other lines an outcross option. Teddy has been granted pre-approval as a potential new FD by both the Tamaskan Dog Register (TDR) and the International Tamaskan Register (ITR). Once Teddy’s evaluations are complete and these two registries give us their final decision on Teddy’s status, we will be sure to post an update!

Teddy has not yet sired any litters, but we greatly look forward to seeing how he will contribute to our program in the coming years.

Teddy is about 26 inches tall and weighs about 75 lbs. He is seal in color, which is a black dog who shows agouti undertones in their black coat. Like his sire, Anubis, Teddy will not phase to white with age, as this trait does not run in his line. According to his Embark Vet DNA results, Teddy’s total wolf content is approximately 31% total Gray Wolf. A link to his Embark results is listed below.

Teddy is named after…

Teddy is a Carrier of Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). DM is a recessive disorder, which means a dog is typically not affected unless they have two copies of that gene. Breeding Carrier to Clear avoids producing any homozygous/affected puppies. Teddy is clear for all other testable genetic disorders on Embark’s panel.

Teddy’s Embark genetic COI is 2%, and he has High Diversity on both his MHC Class II - DLA DRB1 and MHC Class II - DLA DQA1 and DQB1 autoimmune loci.
