“Velkan”

Velkan was born on April 23, 2025, and was bred by Ray and Sara Jones in Indiana. His parents are Summerfield Zoo’s Spooky at White River Wolfdogs (“Spooky”) and Sage & Cedar’s Raven at White River Wolfdogs (“Raven”). Velkan was born to a litter of three puppies (all male!), and was one of two Black Phase boys, with the third boy being Arctic Type. Velkan flew home with me the day he turned 5 weeks old, so that we could begin bonding with him and continue the socialization that his breeder had already started with him as a baby. This socialization window lasts between 4-8 weeks of age for high content wolfdogs, which is why it’s so important that they go home at an early age. Velkan is a 95%+ high content wolfdog.

Velkan has been such an easygoing puppy so far! He has no food aggression (aka resource guarding), and wants to make friends with every dog he meets. He’s still very much in the young teenager stage of puppyhood, so he can be a hooligan at times inside the house, but he’s still learning. His favorite person is me (Katie), and he doesn’t really have much interest in being petted by anyone else (including Dustin), but will happily show off the tricks he knows for treats from strangers. He’s a very curious, confident boy who has taken every new experience head-on and he continues to impress me with his environmental stability and confidence in public. With me, he is super cuddly, sweet, and silly. He’s a very playful kiddo who absolutely loves to roughhouse with our other wolfdogs. He’s still learning canine social skills and can be a bit too rowdy for older dogs, but this is pretty common for high content puppies, who have what’s colloquially known as “puppy privileges” within family groups - they can get away with a lot of nonsense as babies, but will eventually start getting corrected by the older wolfdogs more and more as they reach 1-2 years of age. So far, Velkan has shown a pretty average prey drive for a high content wolfdog, which is to be expected. We don’t allow him to have access to our indoor kitty, Snow, but he can walk politely past her with supervision. Velkan is a very smart puppy and absolutely loves to learn! He picks up new concepts quickly and thinks it’s the best game to show off what he knows for treats.

So far, he’s shaping up to be our biggest animal yet! At 28 weeks, he’s already slightly over 28 inches tall and weighs about 75 lbs., and he still has a LOT of growth left in the coming months!

It is our hope that Velkan will join our breeding program once he reaches adulthood. For now, though, we are enjoying the all-too-brief stages of puppyhood. Stay tuned for updates as he grows up!
